General Notes and Notes are listed below the art. They are ragged-right, and run the width of the figure for 19p6, 30p, 40p6, and landscaped figures. Referenced Notes must be referenced within the figure itself (next to callouts), and should be in numerical order from left to right, then down among callouts. The style for referencing Notes is “[Note (1)],” “[Notes (1) and (2)],” or “[Notes (1)–(6)].”
If there is only one General Note, it must run in with the words “GENERAL NOTE:” with runover flush left. If there are two or more General Notes, list them alphabetically [(a), (b), (c), etc.], beginning flush left below the “GENERAL NOTES:” entry. Runover aligns on text 1 en to the right of the close parenthesis. Remember to end each General Note with a period.
If there are any referenced Notes, they are listed after General Notes. Regardless of how many Notes there are, begin them flush left below “NOTE:” and list them numerically [(1), (2), (3), etc.]. Runover hangs on text 1 en to the right of the close parenthesis. Remember to end each with a period.
NOTE: For any figure, if only the General Notes/Notes run over as the last page of the figure, place the General Notes/Notes on the page below the figure caption with the word “Cont’d” at the end of the figure caption. The same rule applies if the General Notes/Notes run over from one page to another. See sample for the first, second, and third pages.
